2004 Sandy Camp
November 10-15
Warner Springs Ranch (link this)
Warner Springs, California

I left Klamath Falls, Oregon on the Saturday nite before Sandy Camp and took the Amtrak train down to Emeryville, California to meet up with Jean Sheppard, also known as Stargazer in the online community. We finished packing her up on Sunday and Monday we set out on our trip southward in an overloaded rental car. The trip down was delightful as we allowed ourselves plenty of time to make multiple stops on the way to enjoy the scenery - and beautiful is what it was.

We stopped overnite in Bakersfield to visit with our clay buddy, Kathi and her partner, Karen. We clayed the next morning with Kathi and her claypal, Carla, known as wwytch in the online community and made some trades.

By noon we hit the road again and pulled into Warner Springs Ranch by 6.pm. It seems there were only a handful of people who arrived on Tuesday. The cottages were clean, comfortable - although a bit chilly for some attendees - and done in the Spanish/Western adobe styles. While our beds were firm and flat, we heard many of the beds were too hard and had uneven surfaces. For future Sandy Camps, I would recommend, if possible, dragging a foam egg crate to ease the bones onto. To Jean's and my delight there were no telephones, no televisions, and no clocks. There was a small refrigerator, but strict rules forbidding any inroom cooking. hmf. Cooking? No problem for us to follow that rule - we weren't expecting to have time to prepare any meals in the room. This expectation was met beyond our wildest hopes.

We walked to dinner at the Anza Restaurant in the Lodge at the ranch and met SDPCG members Myra Katz and her daughter, Sam Katz, who checked in the same time we did. What a delightful pair. The food was exquisite and we feasted to our belly's capacity while we introduced ourselves and became acquainted. Myra was taking extraordinary precautions to avoid any infections because her leukemia had flared so we learned quickly how to give "air hugs" and give a hand when she grew tired. Becoming fast friends in short order, we planned to take up residence at the same tables.

We cut the night short around 10.pm, helped the Katz's unpack their car and then, back at our cottage, Jean set her alarm clock so we could get up early and lay claim to a prime work area in the tent.

Jean's tree - she smoked out on the porch and this was the beautiful aspen she enjoyed.
