Tutorial Listing Other References for Artists

Though nothing beats practice and art classes, I've compiled a list of wonderful references for artists. I've listed below many books that I've found helpful as well as some wonderful tutorial sites. I've also included the URLs of artists whom I believe are excellent to learn from. If you have found anything that has helped you, please let me know about it; I might add it here :)

Books

  • Animals in Motion by Edward Muybridge...Although this book is old, it is a wonderful reference for studying how animals move. A bit expensive, but very worth it, especially if you are looking at going into animation.
  • The Atlas of Animal Anatomy for Artists by W. Ellenberger...This is a wonderful reference for all different types of animals. It includes many different skeletal and muscular structures on different angles as well as very cool close-ups on different details of the animals.
  • The Art of Animal Drawing by Ken Hultgren...This is an amazing book that shows how to draw a number of different animals in lots of differnt poses. This book has helped me immensely.
  • Drawing Human Anatomy by Giovanni Civardi...This is one of the most amazing books I've ever seen on human anatomy...and I've seen a lot of them :) This guy has a whole series of books, though this is the only one i own. It describes each muscle and bone in the body and shows the placement of each one. It also has tons of angles on different body parts. Awesome!
  • Dynamic Wrinkles and Drapery by Burne Hogarth...Anyone that has read any books by this talented man knows that he knows his stuff. This wonderfully describles different types of wrinkles and folds, and the physics behind them. This book is great for drawing clothes and even wings.
  • How to Draw Manga...I can't say enough good things about this series of books; even though I don't draw in the "manga" style, i've found these books to be infinately useful as references. here are the ones I've found useful in this series:
    • Perspective...a nice reference on drawing perspective
    • Animals and Pets...a great reference for many different kinds of animals
    • Occult Characters...very cool character ideas
    • The Human Body...a great reference for human anatomy
  • Manual of Ornithology by Noble S. Proctor & Patrick J. Lynch...This has tons of wonderful illustrations of avian anatomy. I've found a lot of help on wing structure in this book. If you're a gryphon artist, this is not to be missed.
  • Painting Wildlife Textures Step by Step by Rod Lawrence...Though I am not often fond of "step by step" books, this is a great reference for drawing and painting fur, feathers, scales, horns, eyes...you name it :)

  • Dee Dreslough...a wonderful collection of dragon tutorials, wings, paws, eyes, bodies, and more. Dee also has a wonderful collection of artwork; a must see for any dragon artist.
